Questions for instructor? email Meryl Ann Butler at MerylAnnB@mac.com

None of the items below (other than the lab fee) are absolutely required at the 1st class, which will be focused on
brainstorming and developing ideas for your design.  However, it’s good to bring any that you might have. And if all you
have is an idea in your head, that’s fine too!

1. A pattern or idea for a garment style (possibilities will be discussed in class. A favorite of many students is Virginia
Robertson’s Long Vest/Jacket Pattern, which has sizes 8 – 22 in one pattern, $14. Images from the pattern are shown
below. The garment pattern is not needed until the 3rd or 4th class.)

2. A group of hand-dyed gradations fabric in 8 (or 10) steps, (¼ yds, fat quarters, or ½ yds) such as Cherrywood
suede look hand dyed gradations. Instructor will have a few sets available, and will have swatches to show.

3. Any focus fabric and/or group of prints you may want to use. (Note–prints and hand dyed fabrics should coordinate.
How to do this will be discussed in the first class.)

4. Special embellishment items. (NOTE: the beginning of the inspiration for the garment might start with just one fabric,
or even just one button!)

5. Small fabric scissors (for cutting fabric swatches), blank paper and scotch tape (for taping fabric swatches). Optional
to bring to class, but good to have at home: 3-ring binder and plastic sleeves.

6. Lab fee (for handouts) $4 payable to teacher at first class.
